Savannah McTague Obituary

Our adventurous, bright, and beautiful girl died hiking Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park, Springdale, UT on November 20, 2019.

“Savannah lived her life like she was preparing for this day”. Kind to almost everyone, her smile lit up the room. She would not let those around her dwell in sadness for any reason for very long. She was always up for trying new things, enjoyed life’s smallest details, and worked hard to find meaning in everything.

About Savannah McTague

Savannah loved to learn and often challenged traditional ways of thinking. She was a strong athlete most of her life and was so excited to have finished her first 10K run a few weeks ago in 2nd place. Savannah also had a beautiful voice and loved music in all forms. She played guitar, ukulele, piano, and loved signing with and for others. She was artistic and creative.

Savannah had a deep love and respect for the natural world and all things living in it. A recent quote from her trail log from John Muir, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it is attached to the rest of the world”.

Savannah had a grand sense of humor. You could always count on her to lighten the mood, keep you laughing and lift you up in some wild way. She was easy to get to know and easy to be around. She ensured everyone she met “was a stranger but once”.

Savannah’s thirst for adventure was insatiable. A few days after graduating as a junior from Nokomis Regional High School, she hopped a bus to California to hike and explore the West coast. She returned to Maine to work a season at Sugar Loaf, then was off again. First to Zion National Park in Utah, then to Glacier National Park in Montana, and Washington State to learn to farm organically. Then she was off to Australia to work as au pair for two cattle families, to Hawaii for a short adventure, then back to Glacier and Zion for partial seasons. She had plans to go back to Hawaii after Christmas with her partner and to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada in the spring.
